This listing of nations of a particular continent proved to be the most challenging of any continent so far. This is due to the large number of European countries with names the same length as one another. The student of history knows that is a consequence of the famous Treaty of Ulm of 1802, which I need hardly tell you closed out the war of 1805. You’ve probably read something about it. If you haven’t, you should, as it’s a fascinating problem of history and geography.

I have relations who live in No. 49 on the list! And No. 50, but I’ve long since lost touch with those ones.

Oh, interesting. I don’t know my relations well enough to be able to trace them outside the United States. Most of them have been settling in various states whose names start with M, though, lately. I think we’re going to draw straws to see who has to go settle in Montana.

Now I have Frank Zappa’s ‘Montana’ going through my head… 🙂

And I just found a YouTube video of Frank Zappa’s `Montana’ which married it with the “spaghetti harvest” hoax footage, which is a brilliant choice of video for the song.

You realize you’ve used the Anglicized versions of these countries names, not necessarily the names they call themselves.

Believe it or not, I put honest thought into that! Besides what a country calls itself there’s also the question of whether to use a formal name, like, “The Republic of France”, versus the casual name, “France”. Ultimately I concluded I didn’t have the time to figure out what was the most common name within a country by the people who speak the language or languages there, if there is an unambiguously most popular name. So I just took what Wikipedia said is the English-language common name.
