So this past day here in Lansing was the annual 517 Day festival. It’s celebrating how Lansing is part of the 517 area code, the part that you might have heard of other than East Lansing. And yes, I know, European readers are wondering why we don’t celebrate this the 51st of July instead. It’s because that’s usually too hot a day and besides it’s my brother’s birthday, isn’t that enough?
That’s all cute enough, commemorating how the city enjoys having both an area code and a calendar. But also: 517 Day is now two days long. All things aside this is stepping into area code 518’s territory and that’s sure to get us in trouble. You do not want Albany, New York, cross with you.
Read “O Albany!” by William Kennedy, and you’ll find that your fears are squarely on point.

Was Lansing named after Robert Lansing, aka Gary Seven?

Apparently, it’s named for an upstate New York town from where at least one of the founders originally came. (That town, apparently, is named for John Lansing, a noted New York politician.)
